My wife and I purchased a house almost a year ago. One of the reasons we chose this house was because it was out in the country away from the busyness of the city, it has lots of trees and is difficult to find. We love it!

Sneak peek at one of our wild turkeys that hang out around the house. I was sitting on the porch minding my business when it came through!

We have had several friends come to the house for cookouts, dinners, and meetings which is always a great joy. It is always fun to hear the adventures that people have in trying to find our location. As one of our guests put it….“Y’all are lost!”

Because we are away from the city lights, it gets dark which gives us a spectacular view of the stars at night! We love being able to sit on the porch at night and enjoy the sights! Yet, the great sights come with interesting sounds of things moving through the woods!

For this reason, I keep a rechargeable flashlight ready to go at all times! It has certainly come in handy when I needed it the most. It has not only helped me see what may be moving deep in the trees but has also been a source of comfort if I have to get out in the dark. (No I am not scared of the dark!)

The Psalmist says:

Send out your light and your truth; let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling! Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy, and I will praise you with the lyre, O God, my God.

Psalm 43:3–4 (ESV)

This psalm is a great reminder that when things get dark and our adversaries are overwhelming, we need to go to the source of light and truth!

We are living in some difficult times and it can be challenging for people to know which path to take, which decision to make, and what words to spake. (Ok. I needed a word that rhymed)

We need light to illuminate our path, truth to know what to do and say so that we are not left groping in the dark. The Psalmist reminds us that God is the source of light because God is the light. He also reminds us that God is the source of truth because he is the truth!

If we are going to combat the onslaught of darkness and lies that the enemy is constantly pushing our way, we must go to God, asking for more of him! He alone can help us face today, tomorrow, and the rest of eternity because He alone knows the way.

We can rest assured that God will bring light into our lives and situations. Let this verse be a reminder: For it is you who light my lamp; the Lord my God lightens my darkness. Psalm 18:28 (ESV)

The psalmist longs to be where God dwells.

What is enlightening (see what I did there?) is that when we ask for his guiding presence (light) and his truth, he leads us to where he is. When things look dark and you don’t know which way to go, God will lead you right back to him!!

Entering into the place where God dwells offers us the opportunity to come to the altar, experience overwhelming joy, and respond with praise. It must be the longing of every believer to say with the Psalmist: “One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.” Psalm 27:4 (ESV)

Prayer:

Father, I pray that you would lead us to long for more of you. As the world around us seems to be getting darker, may you help us seek your light and truth. May we experience your presence, be filled with exceeding joy, and respond in abundant praise. For you deserve all the glory for what you are doing in our lives and through our lives in such a time as this!

Fill us to overflowing with your joy and remind our hearts (and faces) that we are blessed by you!

In your name, amen!

Blessings, Chad
