I can certainly say that honesty would have to prevail and I will admit that self-discipline is something that I have not already attained. But like Paul, I am striving toward working to discipline myself to the will and desire of the creator. Because I know that our self-discipline is our defense to keep us from falling into the traps of the enemy.

The dictionary provides us with several definitions for the word discipline. The first has to do with the punishment of course. But the second definition is “training that corrects, molds or perfects the mental faculties or moral character.

Therefore discipline is training in the areas of virtue and self-control.

For a person to be described as a disciplined person, we mean that they are self-controlled. How important is this characteristic of the believer’s life? A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.” Proverbs 25:28 (ESV)

I have had the privilege of traveling to places that have depended upon walls to protect them. Castles, cities, and forts are reminders of this important defensive element to keep invaders at bay. Additionally, the enemy would be vulnerable to archers from the wall among other weaponry to repulse any attack. The people inside the walls felt the safety of being behind the wall.

However, if the walls were ever breached, it would lead to a great loss within the city.

The scripture above in Proverbs 25, says that self-discipline is our defense in life. The enemy cannot touch a self-controlled, well-disciplined believer. However, if we are undisciplined, prone to indulge in our appetites, doing only what feels good, then Satan doesn’t have to do much to defeat us. That is why Peter tells us: Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 1 Peter 5:8–9 (ESV)
