The shepherds were among the first to hear the incredible news of Jesus’ birth. These were ordinary men, often overlooked by society, yet God chose them to be the first recipients of the message that the Savior had come. This choice reminds us that God’s love and salvation are for everyone, regardless of status or position.
Scripture: Luke 2:8-14 (ESV)
“And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, ‘Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.'”
God’s message is for everyone, regardless of status.
The angel’s message to the shepherds was one of hope, joy, and peace. “Fear not,” the angel began, calming their initial fear. God’s message of salvation is not meant to bring fear but comfort and assurance. The announcement of Jesus’ birth was described as “good news of great joy for all people.” This wasn’t a message reserved for the powerful or the privileged—it was for all, including those on the margins.
The shepherds’ response to the angel’s message is also noteworthy. After hearing the good news, they immediately acted. They left their fields to go and see the baby Jesus, and after witnessing Him, they spread the word to others. These humble men became the first evangelists, sharing the good news of Christ’s arrival.
This story challenges us to reflect on how we respond to God’s message.
Like the shepherds, we are invited to receive the good news with joy, to draw near to Jesus, and to share His message with others. The shepherds remind us that God values everyone and desires all people to hear and respond to the gospel.
Action Step: Reach out to someone who may feel overlooked or forgotten this season. Offer a kind gesture, a message of encouragement, or spend time with them to let them know they are valued. In doing so, you reflect the heart of God, who came to bring His good news to everyone.
“The first shall be last, and the last shall be first.” – Jesus
This statement from Jesus reflects the message of the shepherds’ inclusion in the birth announcement. God’s kingdom elevates those often seen as least important, demonstrating His love for all.
Prayer: “Lord, thank You for the reminder that Your good news is for everyone. Help me to have a heart like the shepherds—open to hearing Your message, eager to draw near to You, and willing to share Your love with others. Thank You for valuing me, even when I feel overlooked. May I reflect Your love to those who need it most this season. Amen.”
