The Holy Spirit as Source of Spiritual Gifts

Rediscovering the Holy Spirit

Rediscovering the Holy Spirit

God uniquely gifts every believer to contribute to the body of Christ and serve others. These spiritual gifts are not talents or skills we develop on our own—they are divine enablements given by the Holy Spirit for the church’s good and fulfilling God’s mission. Understanding and using these gifts empowers us to live purposefully and glorify God in all we do.

1 Corinthians 12:4–7 (ESV)
“Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.”

The Holy Spirit equips believers with spiritual gifts to build the church and glorify God.

In 1 Corinthians 12:4–7, Paul explains that spiritual gifts are a manifestation of the Holy Spirit’s presence and power in our lives. These gifts are not meant for personal glory but for the common good of the body of Christ. They are diverse yet unified in purpose, reflecting the beauty of God’s design for His church.

Key Truths About Spiritual Gifts

  1. Diversity in Unity:
    • The Holy Spirit gives various gifts, including wisdom, faith, healing, teaching, and encouragement (1 Corinthians 12:8-11). This diversity ensures that the church is equipped to meet various needs.
  2. Every Believer is Gifted:
    • Spiritual gifts are not reserved for a select few. Every believer has at least one gift uniquely tailored to their role in God’s kingdom (Romans 12:6).
  3. Gifts are for Service:
    • These gifts are not for self-promotion but for serving others and glorifying God. They enable believers to contribute to the church’s mission and strengthen the faith of others (Ephesians 4:11-12).
  4. Discovering Your Gift:
    • The Holy Spirit reveals our spiritual gifts as we grow in faith, serve in different capacities, and seek His guidance in prayer.

Consider the early church in Acts 2. After the Holy Spirit was poured out at Pentecost, believers used their gifts to teach, heal, and share the gospel, leading to explosive growth in the church.

This same Spirit empowers us today, equipping us to fulfill God’s purposes in our communities.

Action Step: Reflect on the ways you feel called to serve. Pray for the Holy Spirit to reveal your spiritual gifts. Consider exploring opportunities in your church or community where you can use your gifts to serve others.

“The spiritual gifts are God’s provision for God’s work through God’s people.” — Sam Storms
