Loving Others as Christ Loved Us

The Root of Conflict: Selfishness vs. Seeking God’s Will

The Root of Conflict: Selfishness vs. Seeking God’s Will

Loving others is the defining mark of a disciple of Christ. While the world offers many definitions of love, Jesus sets the highest standard—He calls us to love others as He has loved us. This is a love that is selfless, sacrificial, and transformational. As we explore this theme, let us examine what it truly means to love others the way Christ loves us.

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” —John 13:34-35 (ESV)

Jesus’ love was not limited to those who were easy to love. He loved the outcasts, the sinners, and even His enemies. His love was not based on conditions but was freely given to all. When we love others as Christ loved us, we extend grace, forgiveness, and kindness, even when difficult. This love sets believers apart in a world of division, selfishness, and conditional relationships.

The apostle John emphasizes that our love for others is evidence of our faith. We deceive ourselves if we claim to love God but do not love others. The love of Christ compels us to serve, encourage, and build up those around us.

In Forgotten God, Francis Chan reminds us that true love is Spirit-empowered. We cannot love like Christ in our strength; only through the power of the Holy Spirit can we genuinely love selflessly and sacrificially.

Heart Check:

Who in your life is God calling you to love with Christ-like compassion today? How can you demonstrate love in action rather than just in words?

Look for an opportunity this week to love someone sacrificially—whether through an act of kindness, words of encouragement, or extending forgiveness. Let Christ’s love flow through you.

“The world does not need another definition of love; it needs a demonstration of it.” —Unknown

How has Christ’s love changed the way you love others? Share your thoughts in the comments and encourage someone by demonstrating Christ’s love today.

Prayer: Lord, teach us to love as You have loved us. Please help us to extend grace and compassion to those around us. May our love testify to Your goodness and bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
