Faith Without Works is Dead: Real Faith Produces Real Action

Learning to Listen in the Presence of the Holy Spirit

Learning to Listen in the Presence of the Holy Spirit

If someone tells you they love you but never show it, would you believe them? The Bible teaches that faith without works is dead, reminding us to live out our faith through our actions.

The same applies to faith. James clarifies that faith is not just something we say—it’s something we live. While salvation is by grace through faith alone (Ephesians 2:8-9), the evidence of that faith is found in how we act. Genuine faith produces real action.

As we continue our Faith in Action – Walking Through James journey, today’s passage challenges us to examine our faith—not just in words, but in how we live it out daily.

“What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace, be warmed and filled,’ without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” —James 2:14-17 (ESV)

“You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. And in the same way was not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.”—James 2:24-26 (ESV)

Faith is more than belief—it is lived out through action.

James presents a hard-hitting truth: Faith without works is dead. What does this mean? Does it contradict Paul’s teaching that we are saved by grace through faith alone?

Not at all. Instead, James and Paul are addressing two sides of the same coin:

Faith is the root, but works are the fruit. A tree that doesn’t bear fruit is useless. Likewise, a faith that produces no action is lifeless.

1. The Danger of Empty Words

James gives a simple illustration: If someone is cold and hungry, and you say, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” but do nothing to help, your words are meaningless.

The same applies to our faith. We deceive ourselves if we claim to follow Christ, but our actions don’t reflect it.

2. Faith in Action: Two Examples

James points to Abraham and Rahab—two people from very different backgrounds—who proved their faith through action.

Both were justified—not by works alone, but by a faith evident through action.

3. Faith Without Action is Like a Lifeless Body

James concludes with a powerful image: “As the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.” (James 2:26)

A body without breath is lifeless. Likewise, faith without action is dead.

This doesn’t mean we can earn salvation, but genuine faith will always result in a changed life.

Signs of a Living Faith:

Genuine faith transforms us and leads us to live differently.

Action Step:

“Faith and works should travel side by side, step answering to step, like the legs of men walking.” —Charles Spurgeon

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of faith. Help me to live out what I believe—not just in words, but in action. Let my life reflect Your love, and may my faith be evident in all I do. Give me opportunities to serve and the courage to obey. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
