Have you ever said something in the heat of the moment that you wished you could take back? Maybe you’ve spoken words of encouragement that lifted someone’s spirit—or perhaps, words of anger that caused deep wounds. James warns us that our tongues can either bless or curse. The same mouth that praises God on Sunday can speak bitterness on Monday. How can this be? As we continue our Faith in Action – Walking Through James journey, today’s passage challenges us to use the power of our words to speak life rather than destruction intentionally.
“The tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.” —James 3:6-12 (ESV)
Our words hold the power to bless or to curse. We must choose to use them for good.
James compares the tongue to a fire, a restless evil, and deadly poison. These are strong words! Why? Because the tongue has enormous influence over our lives and the lives of those around us.
1. The Tongue as a Fire
A single spark can set a forest ablaze—and one careless word can cause irreparable damage.
- A lie can ruin someone’s reputation.
- A harsh insult can wound a heart for years.
- Gossip can divide churches, families, and friendships.
James says the tongue is set on fire by hell itself—meaning that if left unchecked, our words can become tools of destruction.
2. The Struggle to Tame the Tongue
James points out that we have tamed wild animals, but no one can completely tame the tongue. Why? Because the words we speak come from our hearts.
- “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” (Matthew 12:34)
- If we struggle with gossip, slander, or negativity, it’s a sign that our hearts need transformation.
3. The Contradiction of Blessing and Cursing
James exposes a sobering reality:
- “With [our tongue] we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God.”
How can we praise God with our mouths but tear down others with the same lips?
James uses two analogies:
- A spring cannot produce both fresh and salt water.
- A fig tree cannot bear olives.
The point? A heart surrendered to Christ should produce words reflecting His love. If our speech is filled with anger, criticism, and negativity, we must ask ourselves: What is going on in my heart?
How Do We Speak Life Instead of Destruction?
- Pause before speaking. Ask, Will this build up or tear down?
- Surrender your heart to God. Only He can truly change what flows from our mouths.
- Be intentional with words of blessing. Encourage, uplift, and bring hope through what you say.
If we allow God to transform our hearts, our words will follow.
Action Step:
- Evaluate Your Speech. Do your words bless or hurt others?
- Speak Life Today. Choose to encourage someone with your words intentionally.
- Pray for a Transformed Heart. Ask God to change your heart so that your words reflect Him.
