Have you ever met someone who was incredibly intelligent but lacked wisdom?
There’s a significant difference between earthly wisdom and godly wisdom. The world often equates wisdom with intelligence, success, or even manipulation to get ahead. But James teaches that true wisdom is not about personal gain—it’s about reflecting Christ in how we live, leading to peace rather than division.
As we continue our Faith in Action – Walking Through James journey, today’s passage challenges us to seek wisdom from above, which produces peace, humility, and righteousness.
“Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.”
—James 3:13-18 (ESV)
True wisdom reflects Christ, leading to humility, peace, and righteousness rather than selfish ambition and division.
James presents a clear contrast between two types of wisdom:
1. Earthly Wisdom: Driven by Selfish Ambition and Jealousy
James warns that bitter jealousy and selfish ambition are the marks of earthly wisdom. Instead of drawing us closer to God, this kind of wisdom leads to:
- Pride – Seeking to elevate oneself rather than glorify God.
- Division – Relationships are damaged when wisdom is used for manipulation or control.
- Chaos and Evil – James says that wherever jealousy and ambition thrive, “there will be disorder and every vile practice.”
This type of wisdom may bring temporary success but ultimately leads to brokenness and spiritual emptiness.
2. Wisdom from Above: Pure, Peaceful, and Righteous
James describes godly wisdom using eight characteristics:
- Pure – Rooted in holiness and moral integrity.
- Peaceable – Promotes unity rather than conflict.
- Gentle – Kind and considerate, not harsh or abrasive.
- Open to reason – Willing to listen and learn, not stubborn.
- Full of mercy and good fruits – Demonstrates grace in actions.
- Impartial – Fair and free from favoritism.
- Sincere – Genuine, without deceit or hypocrisy.
3. Wisdom’s Fruit: A Harvest of Peace
James closes with a profound truth: “A harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.”
- Godly wisdom produces peace. It doesn’t stir up unnecessary arguments or prideful debates.
- When we live with wisdom from above, we reflect Christ. Our lives bear fruit—not just in knowledge but also in how we love and serve others.
James challenges us to evaluate what kind of wisdom we are pursuing. Are we seeking wisdom to elevate ourselves or wisdom that reflects God’s character?
How Do We Seek Wisdom from Above?
- Ask God for wisdom. (James 1:5) He promises to give it freely.
- Examine your motives. Is your wisdom leading to peace or pride?
- Live out wisdom in action. Show humility, kindness, and understanding in your relationships.
Action Step:
- Pray for wisdom from above. Ask God to fill your heart with humility and peace.
- Check your words and actions. Do they reflect godly wisdom or earthly ambition?
- Be a peacemaker. Sow peace in your conversations and relationships today.
