Have you ever made plans only to have them completely fall apart? We often meticulously plan our lives—our careers, relationships, goals, and even daily schedules. But James reminds us of a sobering truth: we don’t control the future—God does. While planning is wise, trusting God is essential. True faith is about making plans and surrendering them, trusting God’s will.
As we continue our Faith in Action – Walking Through James journey, today’s passage challenges us to submit our plans to God, trusting His will is better than anything we could imagine.
“Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit’—yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.’ As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.”

Surrendering our future to God leads to peace, humility, and a life fully aligned with His will.
James speaks directly to those who make plans without considering God. He’s not saying that planning is wrong, but rather that planning without seeking God’s will is arrogant and foolish.
1. We Are Not in Control of Tomorrow
James reminds us, “You do not know what tomorrow will bring.” How true is that?
- Life is unpredictable—things can change in an instant.
- No matter how much we prepare, only God knows the future.
- Holding too tightly to our plans can lead to frustration and disappointment when things don’t go as expected.
Instead of placing our confidence in our plans, we should place it in the One who holds the future.
2. Our Lives Are Like a Mist
James uses a striking analogy: “What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.”
- Our time on earth is brief compared to eternity.
- This doesn’t mean our lives are meaningless, but that we should live with eternity in mind.
- Chasing after temporary things will never satisfy, but seeking God’s will has eternal significance.
When we acknowledge that our time is limited, we live with greater purpose, urgency, and dependence on God.
3. Humility in Our Plans: “If the Lord Wills”
James teaches us a powerful phrase: “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.”
- This isn’t just about saying the words—it’s about an attitude of humility that trusts God over ourselves.
- Instead of boasting about our plans, we should hold them with open hands, allowing God to lead.
- We find peace when we surrender our plans to Him, even when things don’t go as expected.
4. The Sin of Knowing but Not Doing
James concludes with a powerful statement: “Whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.”
- Ignoring God’s will is not just unwise—it’s sinful.
- God doesn’t just want lip service—He wants obedience and trust.
- Living in faith means not only trusting God but acting on His leading.
How Do We Surrender Our Plans to God?
- Seek God first. Pray before making plans and ask for His guidance.
- Hold plans loosely. Be willing to adjust when God redirects you.
- Live with an eternal perspective. Ask, Is this plan for my glory or for God’s?
Action Step:
- Write down your most significant plans or goals. Have you prayed over them? Have you surrendered them to God?
- Ask God to guide your future. Pray, “Lord, let Your will be done, not mine.”
- Trust Him with the unknown. Rest in the truth that God’s plans are better than anything we could plan for ourselves.
