Waiting is hard. Whether you’re waiting for a breakthrough, healing, provision, or answers to prayer, seasons of delay can stretch our faith and test our endurance. But James reminds us that even in our suffering, God is not absent—He is at work.
Patience in suffering isn’t passive resignation. It’s active trust in a faithful God, believing He sees, cares, and will act in His perfect time. As we continue our Faith in Action – Walking Through James journey, today’s passage encourages us to stand firm in our waiting because the Lord is full of compassion and mercy.
“Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door. As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.” —James 5:7–11 (ESV)
Patience in suffering is an act of faith—trusting that God is working, even when we can’t yet see the outcome.
James calls us to deep, enduring patience—not just in minor inconveniences but also in the painful, uncertain seasons of life.
1. Patience Like a Farmer
James compares our waiting to that of a farmer who waits for the rain and the harvest.
- A farmer prepares the soil, sows the seed, and waits, knowing he cannot rush the rain or force the fruit to grow.
- In the same way, we must be faithful to plant seeds of faith and obedience and then trust God to bring the harvest in His timing.
This kind of patience is not passive—it is hopeful endurance rooted in the character of God.
2. Establish Your Heart
James tells us, “Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.”
- To “establish” your heart means to anchor your soul in God’s promises.
- It’s a call to stabilize your emotions, steady your faith, and fix your eyes on eternity.
- The return of Christ reminds us that this world’s suffering is temporary, and justice, healing, and restoration are on the way.
3. Avoid Grumbling and Division
While suffering, it’s easy to take our frustration out on others—but James warns us not to “grumble against one another.”
- Suffering can either pull us together or tear us apart, depending on how we respond.
- Instead of complaining, we’re called to encourage and support one another in the waiting.
4. Look to the Prophets and to Job
James points us to examples of endurance:
- The prophets who suffered rejection, hardship, and persecution for the sake of God’s message.
- Job, who endured unimaginable loss and grief, yet never abandoned his faith.
And what does James say about Job? “You have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.”
- God never wastes our suffering.
- Even when we can’t understand the “why,” we can trust the Who—the Lord who is full of compassion and mercy.
How Do We Trust God in Seasons of Waiting?
- Cling to His Word. Fill your heart with promises that remind you of God’s faithfulness.
- Pray honestly. Bring your frustrations, fears, and longings to God—He can handle them.
- Refuse to isolate. Lean on others in the body of Christ for encouragement and support.
- Fix your eyes on Jesus. Trust that He sees your suffering and is with you in it.
Action Step:
- Reflect: What area of your life feels like a long season of waiting or suffering right now?
- Write out a prayer of surrender and trust, offering that area to God.
- Encourage someone else who is also walking through a difficult season—be the voice of hope and patience to them.
