How Has Your Faith Grown? Consider Journaling Your Spiritual Growth

Learning to Listen in the Presence of the Holy Spirit

Learning to Listen in the Presence of the Holy Spirit

Spiritual growth doesn’t always happen in leaps—it often takes root slowly, quietly, and deep within our hearts. As we’ve journeyed through the book of James, you’ve likely been stretched, challenged, and encouraged. But have you paused to reflect on how your faith has grown? Journaling has been one of the most impactful disciplines to help me pursue spiritual growth.

Reflection is a spiritual discipline. Looking back, we can see God’s hand more clearly, recognize the work He’s done in us, and gain direction for the road ahead.

Today’s devotional invites you to pause, reflect, and celebrate the spiritual growth God has nurtured in you.

“Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!”
—2 Corinthians 13:5 (ESV)

Spiritual growth is intentional. As we reflect on where we’ve been, we become more aware of who we’re becoming.

James taught us that faith isn’t just something we confess—it’s something we live. Over the past month, you’ve been invited to apply truth to action, examine your heart, and walk in integrity. So now, it’s time to ask: Has anything changed in you?

1. Look Back with Honesty

What were your spiritual habits like before starting this study?

As you think through each week of this study, ask:

This reflection requires honesty—not for condemnation but for celebration and continued transformation.

2. Recognize God’s Work in You

Spiritual growth might look like:

Even the most minor acts of obedience are evidence of real growth. Don’t overlook them. Growth isn’t about perfection—it’s about progression.

3. Journal Your Journey

James encouraged us to be doers of the Word. One of the best ways to live that out is to journal your spiritual journey.

Here are a few prompts to help guide your reflection:

Write down prayers, lessons learned, scriptures that stuck with you, or even questions you still have. Your journal can become a spiritual milestone marker, reminding you of God’s faithfulness when future trials come.

4. Let Growth Lead to Next Steps

Spiritual growth always leads to something:

Ask the Lord what your next step of faith should be. Maybe it’s joining a small group, starting a new devotional habit, reaching out to someone you’ve drifted from, or mentoring someone in their walk.

Action Step:

Take 20–30 minutes today to sit with your journal (or a notebook or notes app) and respond to the journaling prompts above. Pray as you reflect, and ask God to show you how you’ve grown and where He’s leading you next.

Then, consider sharing one of those reflections with a friend or group—testimonies build faith.

“Growth is not the product of effort alone, but of abiding. Stay close to Jesus, and transformation will follow.”

Lord, thank You for walking with me through this study. Thank You for every truth You’ve spoken, every conviction You’ve brought, and every step of growth You’ve led me to. Help me not to forget what You’ve shown me. Keep changing me, molding me, and using me for Your glory. I want to keep growing—keep abiding—every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
