The story of Mary is one of the most remarkable examples of faith and surrender in the Bible. Imagine being a young woman, perhaps a teenager, living an ordinary life in a small village, and suddenly, an angel appears to you with an extraordinary message: you are chosen to carry the Son of God. Mary’s response is awe-inspiring. Instead of reacting with fear or hesitation, she responds with humble surrender: “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”

Scripture: Luke 1:26-38 (ESV)
“In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary… And Mary said, ‘Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.’ And the angel departed from her.”

True faith is demonstrated through surrender to God’s will.

Mary’s response reveals her deep trust in God’s plan, even though she could not fully understand what it would mean for her future. Accepting this calling meant facing potential judgment from her community, risking her relationship with Joseph, and stepping into an unknown path filled with challenges. Yet her faith enabled her to say “yes” to God, even when difficult.

Surrendering to God’s will often means stepping into the unknown. It means letting go of our plans, control, and sometimes even comfort. Mary teaches us that true faith is not about understanding every detail; it’s about trusting that God’s plan is greater than our own. It’s about being willing to say, “Let it be to me according to Your word,” even when we don’t have all the answers.

Think about areas in your life where God asks you to surrender.

It could be a relationship, a career decision, a fear, or an ambition. Sometimes, surrender feels like a loss, but surrender is the gateway to greater blessings and purpose in God’s kingdom. When we let go of our need to control, we create space for God to move in ways we couldn’t imagine.

Mary’s story also reminds us that God doesn’t call us because we are capable—He calls us because He knows we are willing. He equips those He calls. Mary wasn’t chosen because she had everything figured out or because she had any special qualifications. She was chosen because of her heart of obedience and surrender. In the same way, God isn’t looking for our perfection but our willingness to trust Him.

Action Step:

Identify a challenging area where you need to surrender to God. Take a few minutes to reflect on what is holding you back from fully trusting Him with this part of your life. Write down a prayer of surrender, giving this situation to God and asking Him to guide you according to His will.

“All God’s giants have been weak men who did great things for God because they reckoned on God being with them.” – Hudson Taylor

This quote from Hudson Taylor, a missionary who faced countless challenges, reminds us that God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness. When we surrender, we are not left alone; God’s presence and strength empower us.

Closing Prayer:
“Lord, thank You for Mary’s example of humble surrender. I confess that I often struggle to trust You fully and to let go of my plans. Help me to be like Mary, willing to say ‘yes’ to You, even when I don’t understand. I ask for courage to surrender the areas where I hold on too tightly. Let Your will be done in me, and may I trust in Your good and perfect plan. Amen.”
