Does God Still Speak Today?
When you begin your new life in Christ, one of the most powerful discoveries is that God desires a personal relationship with you. He is not distant or silent. He is present, and He speaks. But how do we hear Him? What does it mean to listen to God in everyday life?
Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). If you belong to Him, you can learn to recognize His voice. Hearing from God is not reserved for a few spiritual elites. It is part of the everyday Christian life.
1. God Speaks in Many Ways
Throughout Scripture, God communicates with people in various ways. He spoke to Moses through a burning bush. He revealed dreams to Joseph. God guided the early church through the Holy Spirit. He often speaks through His creation, through other believers, and through an inner sense of prompting or peace. However, His most consistent and reliable way of speaking is through His written Word.
As you begin your new life in Christ, it is essential to understand that hearing God’s voice does not always mean an audible sound. It often comes as a quiet nudge in your spirit, a verse that seems to leap off the page, or a deep peace that confirms a decision. God uses the Holy Spirit to guide you into truth, to comfort you, and to lead you in the direction He wants you to go.
When you open your Bible, you are not just reading words on a page. You are stepping into a living conversation with the Creator of the universe. Scripture is alive and active. Ask questions as you read, such as, “God, what are You saying to me through this passage?” and “How can I live this out today?”
The more you expose your heart and mind to the truth of Scripture, the more you will begin hearing God’s voice. Learning to listen to God is one of the most life-giving habits you can develop in your new life in Christ.
2. Hearing God Starts with Relationship
Just like with any friendship, learning to recognize someone’s voice takes time. You don’t get to know someone by hearing them just once or twice. You learn their tone, their expressions, and their heart through consistent connection. The same is true with God. The more time you spend with Him, the more familiar His voice becomes.
This is why your time in Scripture, prayer, worship, and quiet reflection is essential. These spiritual practices are not about checking off religious boxes. They are about creating space for a relationship. As you meet with God day after day, your heart becomes more sensitive to His leading.
God wants you to walk closely with Him. He is not playing hide and seek, he wants to be known. He has invited you into an ongoing conversation. That is what makes your new life in Christ so beautiful—it is not built on rules, but on relationship.
As your relationship with Him deepens, you will begin to recognize His voice more clearly. You will learn how He encourages, how He convicts, and how He gently leads you forward. Listening to God is not about getting everything right, but about growing more aware of His presence and more responsive to His voice.
3. God’s Voice Always Aligns with His Word
One key to discerning God’s voice is knowing His Word. The Bible is the filter through which every message, thought, or feeling must pass. God will never speak something to you that contradicts the truth already revealed in Scripture. If you feel a prompting or hear something in your heart, test it by asking, “Does this line up with the Bible?”
Many people are misled by thoughts or feelings that sound spiritual but are not rooted in God’s Word. That is why Scripture must be your anchor. The more familiar you are with the Bible, the more confident you will be in identifying what truly comes from God. You will know that God’s voice brings clarity, not confusion. It brings peace, not fear. It offers conviction that leads to growth, not condemnation that crushes your spirit.
In your new life in Christ, developing a strong foundation in God’s Word is essential. It protects you from deception and empowers you to walk in truth. Every time you open the Bible, you are positioning yourself to hear from the God who is faithful to speak in ways that are consistent, trustworthy, and life-giving.
4. Obedience Strengthens Your Ability to Hear
As you grow in your new life in Christ, obedience becomes part of how you learn to hear more clearly. God desires not only that you listen to Him but also that you respond to what He says. When you act on His guidance, even in small ways, it strengthens your spiritual sensitivity. It is like tuning a radio; the more you adjust, the clearer the signal becomes.
Obedience might look like forgiving someone who has hurt you, stepping out in faith to serve in your church, or simply setting aside time each day to be with God. Each step of obedience is a way of saying, “God, I trust You.” That trust opens your heart to hear more from Him. Delayed obedience or disobedience often clouds our ability to listen. But when you choose to say yes, even when it is difficult, God honors that.
Start with the simple things. God often speaks in practical and gentle ways, such as prompting you to reach out to a friend, pray for someone, or speak truth with kindness. As you follow through, you will notice that hearing God becomes easier and more natural over time. Obedience is not about perfection, but about alignment. When your heart is aligned with God’s will, your ability to hear His voice deepens in your new life in Christ.
Reflection: What Is God Saying to You?
Take a few moments and quiet your heart. Ask God to speak. Is there a Scripture He is bringing to mind? A person He wants you to encourage? A sin He wants you to surrender? Write down what you sense He might be saying.
Then ask, “What step of obedience can I take in response?”
Conclusion: You Can Hear God’s Voice
Hearing from God is not a mysterious or mystical experience. It is relational. It grows as you walk with Him day by day. Your new life in Christ includes this incredible gift: the God of the universe wants to speak to you personally.
He speaks through His Word, His Spirit, His people, and even your everyday circumstances. Lean in. Listen closely. Trust that He is near, and He is speaking.
