Scripture: Nehemiah 8:10 (ESV)
“Then he said to them, ‘Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.’”
Devotional
When life feels overwhelming, it’s easy to forget the power of joy. We often think of joy as a fleeting emotion that comes and goes, but the Bible paints a different picture. Joy, especially from God, is more than just a feeling—it is a source of strength. Nehemiah reminds us that the joy of the Lord is our strength.
In the book of Nehemiah, the people of Israel had returned from exile and were beginning to rebuild their lives. They had just heard the law of God read to them and were filled with sorrow over how far they had fallen short of it. But Nehemiah encouraged them not to grieve but to rejoice in the day’s holiness and the goodness of God. He knew their strength would come not from dwelling on their failures but from embracing God’s joy.
God’s joy transcends circumstances. It doesn’t rely on everything going right or having all the answers. Instead, it is a joy rooted in God’s character—His goodness, love, and faithfulness. Tapping into this joy empowers us to keep going, even when life feels hard. This joy strengthens us because it reminds us that God is in control and working all things for our good, even when we can’t see it.
We can be joyful not because life is perfect but because we serve a perfect God. The more we focus on who God is and what He has done, the more joy rises within us. And this joy strengthens us, allowing us to face challenges with confidence and peace.
If you’re feeling weary or worn down today, remember you don’t have to rely on your strength. God offers you His joy, and it is through this joy that you will find the strength to keep moving forward.
Action Step
Take a moment today to do something that brings you joy and connects you with God. It could be as simple as walking in nature, listening to your favorite worship song, or praying. As you do, reflect on God’s goodness and let His joy fill your heart.
Afterward, write down how focusing on God and finding joy in Him impacted your outlook or energy for the day.
Prayer
Father, thank You for the joy that is found in You alone. When life feels overwhelming, and I feel weak, remind me that Your joy is my strength. Help me focus on who You are and what You have done, knowing that You are with and for me. Fill me with Your joy today and strengthen me for the road ahead. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
