Introduction:
Faith is a word we often hear in Christian circles, but what does it mean to have faith? Is it just wishful thinking, or is it something more profound? The Bible gives us a beautiful and concrete definition in Hebrews 11:1, where we are told that “faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (ESV). It is not a vague hope or a blind leap into the unknown but a confident trust in God’s promises, even when they are not immediately visible.
Scripture Reflection:
“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”
— Hebrews 11:1 (ESV)
This verse captures the essence of faith in two key phrases: “the assurance of things hoped for” and “the conviction of things not seen.” It is not based on what we see or feel but on the reliability of God and His promises. Assurance speaks to a deep, unshakable confidence that God will do what He has promised. Conviction means that even when our eyes cannot see the outcome, our hearts know it’s true because God has said it.
The Nature of Faith:
Faith is foundational to our relationship with God. It is through faith that we come to believe in the unseen truths of Scripture, such as God’s love, Jesus’s work on the cross, and the presence of the Holy Spirit. Faith allows us to trust that God works all things together for our good, even when life seems confusing or painful (Romans 8:28).
Faith is also forward-looking. It rests on the hope of future realities that God has promised. We may not yet see the fulfillment of those promises, but faith enables us to live as though they are already true. Just as Abraham trusted God’s promise to give him descendants as numerous as the stars, even when he had no children, we trust God’s promises.
Why Faith is Fundamental to the Christian Life:
Faith is not only the key to salvation (Ephesians 2:8), but it is also the bedrock of our daily walk with God. Without faith, it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6) because it is how we acknowledge He exists and rewards those who earnestly seek Him. Every act of obedience, every step of trust, is rooted in faith.
Faith sustains us when life feels uncertain. When we don’t understand the why, we trust in the Who—God, who is faithful and true. Faith teaches us to trust God’s heart when we cannot see His hand.
Life Principle:
Faith is believing in God’s promises, even when you can’t see them.
Action Step:
Take some time today to reflect on areas of your life where you need to trust God more deeply. Perhaps there is a promise you’re waiting on, or maybe you’re struggling to see God’s hand in a difficult situation. Write down these areas and ask God to help you increase your faith. Pray for the strength to trust Him, even when the outcome seems uncertain.
Recommended Book: The Pursuit of God by A.W. Tozer
This classic book by A.W. Tozer is chosen because it beautifully explores the nature of faith as a pursuit of the heart of God. Tozer writes about how true faith leads us into deeper intimacy with God and that pursuing God is the essence of the Christian life. This book encourages believers to seek God in all circumstances and trust Him, even when we cannot understand His actions. It complements this devotional by helping the reader develop a deep, longing faith that is both personal and transformative.
