Scripture: John 14:23 (ESV) “Jesus answered him, ‘If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.’”

Devotional

Obedience isn’t a word we often associate with joy. In fact, sometimes we think of obedience as something difficult or restrictive. But in John 14:23, Jesus teaches us that true obedience flows out of love, and through this obedience, we experience deeper intimacy with God. The joy of obedience comes from knowing that we live in alignment with God’s will and His best for our lives.

When Jesus says, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word,” He’s reminding us that our obedience is a reflection of our love for Him. It’s not about following rules for the sake of rules; it’s about living in a way that pleases the One we love. When we choose to obey God’s word, we are expressing our trust in His wisdom and His goodness. And as a result, we draw closer to Him.

Obedience isn’t about perfection.

Obedience isn’t about perfection, but about a heart that desires to follow God’s ways. There may be moments when obedience feels difficult or counter-cultural, but as we continue to submit to God’s leading, we begin to experience the joy of walking in His will. Jesus promises that when we keep His word, we experience the Father’s love in a deeper way. God makes His home with us, and in that place of intimacy, we find true joy.

It’s important to remember that obedience is not something we do in our own strength. The Holy Spirit helps us to follow God’s commands and gives us the desire to live according to His word. As we lean on His guidance, we find that obedience is not burdensome but rather a pathway to experiencing more of God’s love and presence in our lives.

If we want to experience the fullness of joy that comes from knowing God, we must embrace a life of obedience. And in that obedience, we will find the peace, joy, and love that only come from walking closely with Him.

Action Step

Identify one area of your life where you sense God calling you to greater obedience. It might be something you’ve been hesitant to surrender or a step of faith He’s asking you to take. Write it down and commit to obeying God in this area, trusting that His way is best.

Take time today to pray for the Holy Spirit’s strength and guidance to walk in obedience. As you do, reflect on how obedience deepens your relationship with God and leads to greater joy.

Prayer

Lord, I thank You for the joy of living in obedience to You. Help me love You by keeping Your word, even when it’s hard, or I don’t fully understand Your ways. Give me the strength and the desire to obey You, knowing that Your plans for me are good. I long to experience more of Your love and presence in my life. Thank You for walking with me every step of the way. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
