Hey friend! Have you ever considered how important trust is in our everyday lives? We trust in so many things—our friends, family, and maybe even our morning coffee to wake us up. But have you ever wondered what it means to trust God? Not just believe in Him, but fully trust Him with your life, even when things feel uncertain or out of control?

In today’s post, we’ll explore what it means to trust God, especially when life doesn’t go as expected. Whether you’re new to faith or looking for deeper trust in God, let’s examine how faith and trust go hand in hand.

What Does It Mean to Trust God?

Trusting God is more than just saying we believe in Him. It’s about relying on His promises and character, even when life feels uncertain or we don’t have all the answers.

One of the most well-known verses on trust is Proverbs 3:5-6, which says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

This verse invites us to trust God with every part of our lives—our decisions, plans, and fears. Notice it says, “all your heart.” It’s not about holding back or trusting God only in the areas where we feel comfortable. It’s about giving Him everything, even when it’s hard.

Think about it this way: Trust is essential in our relationships with family and friends, right? We trust the people closest to us because we know them, have seen their character, and believe they’ll be there for us when we need them. Trusting God is similar. It’s about knowing Him, trusting His heart, and believing He is always for us, even when we don’t understand the path He’s leading us down.

I must admit that God has often worked on this area in my life. When the circumstances of life didn’t work out as I thought they would, the temptation to be discouraged, disappointed, and disillusioned becomes overwhelming. When I have to work on a “plan D” for my life, I must remind myself that chapters end, and new ones always begin.

Ultimately, I am encouraged when I remind myself that this is not the end of my journey but the start of something new in Him. Besides, with all that He has done to place me where He wanted me to be in the past, I can trust Him today and in the future.

Biblical Example: Abraham’s Trust in God (Genesis 22)

One of the most powerful examples of trust in the Bible is the story of Abraham and Isaac in Genesis 22. God asked Abraham to do something that must have seemed impossible—sacrifice his only son, Isaac. Now, Isaac wasn’t just any child. He was the promised child through whom God had said Abraham’s descendants would come. So why would God ask Abraham to give up the very thing He had promised?

Abraham trusted God’s promise despite how difficult this command must have been. He believed that God could still fulfill His promises, even if they didn’t make sense at the moment. Because of Abraham’s trust, God provided a ram in place of Isaac. Abraham’s faith didn’t come from knowing the outcome but from knowing God’s character.

There will be moments in our lives when God’s plan doesn’t make sense. We might feel like things aren’t going as planned, or we don’t understand why we face certain challenges. But like Abraham, we can trust that God is faithful to His promises, even when we can’t see the full picture.

Why Trusting God Is Hard but Essential

Trusting God can be hard. We like to be in control, don’t we? We want to know how things will turn out, and when life gets unpredictable, it’s natural to want to take matters into our own hands.

But trusting God is essential because He sees what we don’t. Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” God’s plans are always good, even when they don’t match ours.

Sometimes, we struggle to trust God because of past disappointments or fear of the unknown. Maybe you’ve been hurt, or things didn’t turn out as expected. But trusting God means letting go of the need to control the outcome and believing His character is always good.

Practical Steps for Growing in Trust

So, how do we grow in trusting God? Here are a few steps you can take to deepen your faith and rely on Him more fully:

  1. Pray for Trust:
Ask God to help you trust Him more. Prayer is where we can be honest with God about our fears and doubts. Ask Him to give you the strength to let go and trust Him, especially in the areas where you struggle the most.
  2. Surrender Control:
This is the hard part. Trusting God often means surrendering control over what we care about most—our finances, relationships, and careers. But when we surrender, we give God room to work in ways we never imagined.
  3. Lean on Scripture:
When you’re struggling to trust, go back to God’s Word. Verses like Philippians 4:6-7 (“Do not be anxious about anything…”) and Psalm 46:10 (“Be still, and know that I am God”) are reminders that God is in control and that we can trust Him no matter what.

Call to Action: Reflect, Pray, and Trust

Let’s take a moment to reflect on where you might be holding back from fully trusting God. Is it in your finances? Your relationships? Your career? Ask yourself: Where am I trying to control the outcome instead of trusting God?

Spend a few moments in prayer, asking God to help you release those areas to Him and trust Him with the results. Trust doesn’t mean you’ll always understand the path, but it means believing that God is good, no matter where the road leads.
