Scripture: Colossians 3:13 (ESV)
“Bear with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.”
Devotional
Forgiveness is one of the most challenging yet liberating acts we can experience. Whether we need to forgive someone who has hurt us or seek forgiveness ourselves, forgiveness often feels like an uphill battle. It can be difficult to let go of the pain, disappointment, or anger we’ve been carrying. Yet, God calls us to forgive, not just because it’s good for our relationships but because it brings peace to our souls.
In Colossians 3:13, Paul encourages us to forgive others like the Lord has forgiven us. This is no small task. God’s forgiveness toward us is generous, unconditional, and full of grace. He doesn’t hold our sins against us but freely offers us His grace. We are called to reflect that same grace to others, even when it feels undeserved. But the beauty of forgiveness is that it is more about freeing ourselves than justifying the other person’s actions.
Forgiveness doesn’t mean forgetting or excusing the hurt. It means releasing the right to hold onto bitterness, resentment, or revenge. It’s choosing to trust that God can heal the wounds, both seen and unseen. When we forgive, we experience a deep peace that comes from knowing that we are walking in obedience to God’s will and allowing His love to flow through us.
Sometimes, the hardest person to forgive is ourselves. We can be our worst critics, holding onto shame, regret, and guilt. But just as God calls us to forgive others, He also invites us to forgive ourselves. When we do, we can experience the peace that comes from releasing ourselves from the weight of our past and embracing God’s grace.
Today, God invites you to experience His peace through forgiveness—whether forgiving someone who has hurt you or letting go of the burdens you’ve placed on yourself.
Action Step
Take a moment to reflect on whether there’s someone you need to forgive or if you need to forgive yourself. Write down their name or your name, and pray and ask God to help you release the pain and offer forgiveness. Take a step toward reconciliation, whether having a conversation or simply praying for that person.
Afterward, reflect on how letting go of unforgiveness impacts your heart. How did it feel to release that burden to God?
Prayer
Lord, I thank You for the incredible grace You have shown me. I know I have been forgiven a lot, and I ask for Your help in forgiving those who have hurt me. Help me release any bitterness, anger, or resentment I’ve been carrying. Teach me to walk in the peace that comes from offering forgiveness and living in Your grace. I also ask for Your strength to forgive myself where I’ve been holding onto guilt or shame. Thank You for Your healing and Your peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
