Elizabeth’s story is one of joy that comes from seeing God’s promises take shape, both in her own life and in the life of Mary. Elizabeth had experienced her miracle—after years of waiting and longing, she found herself carrying a child, John the Baptist, in her old age. When Mary, her younger relative, arrived to visit, Elizabeth was filled with overwhelming joy. At that moment, the baby in her womb leaped, and she was filled with the Holy Spirit, recognizing the significance of the child that Mary carried.

“In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she exclaimed with a loud cry, ‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!'” Luke 1:39-45 (ESV)

Joy is found in witnessing God’s promises fulfilled.

The joy Elizabeth experienced was not just about her blessing but also about seeing God’s promises fulfilled for others. She immediately recognized the miracle within Mary, and her response was pure, uninhibited joy. She spoke words of blessing over Mary, affirming what God was doing through her. Elizabeth’s joy was contagious—it wasn’t limited to her own miracle but extended to God’s greater plan that was unfolding before her eyes.

It can be easy to focus on what we lack or the things we are waiting for God to fulfill in our lives. But Elizabeth teaches us that joy is often found when we take our eyes off ourselves and celebrate what God is doing around us. Witnessing God’s faithfulness in the lives of others serves as a reminder of His goodness and assurance that His promises are true.

Elizabeth’s joy was rooted in recognizing God’s presence and His work.

The Holy Spirit filled her, allowing her to see beyond the ordinary and declare blessings over Mary. In the same way, we are invited to be filled with the Spirit and rejoice in the fulfillment of God’s promises, both in our lives and those around us.

Take time today to reflect on the blessings in your life and in the lives of those around you. Make a list of at least three people who are experiencing God’s faithfulness in their lives, and take a moment to rejoice with them. Reach out to one of these people today—send them a message of encouragement and celebrate what God is doing in their life.

“Joy is the simplest form of gratitude.” – Karl Barth

This quote by Karl Barth reminds us that joy and gratitude go hand in hand. When we are grateful for what God is doing, joy naturally follows. Allow yourself to be filled with gratitude today for God’s promises fulfilled, both in your life and in the lives of others.

Prayer: “Lord, thank You for Your faithfulness and joy from seeing Your promises fulfilled. Help me to be like Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit and quick to recognize Your work in the lives of others. May I rejoice with those who rejoice and find joy in Your presence. Let my heart be filled with gratitude, and may I celebrate Your goodness every day. Amen.”
