The birth of Jesus is one of the most humble scenes imaginable. The Savior of the world, the King of Kings, was not born in a palace but in a stable, laid in a manger. This was because there was no room for them at the inn—no place in the comfortable or convenient places of the world. God chose to enter humanity in an unremarkable and easily overlooked setting, reminding us that He meets us in the humble and ordinary places of our lives. Finding God in humble places gives us hope!

“In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger because there was no place for them in the inn.” Scripture: Luke 2:1-7 (ESV)

God meets us in our humility.

The manger, a feeding trough for animals, became the first bed for the King of Kings. This humble setting reflects God’s heart—His willingness to come close to us, not in grandeur but in simplicity. It is a beautiful picture of God’s love, reaching out to those who feel small, insignificant, or overlooked.

Jesus came to identify with all people, especially those without a place.

This story of Jesus’ birth also challenges us to consider our lives. When we read that there was “no room at the inn,” we are reminded that, even today, many still make no room for Jesus. Our world can be so full—full of busyness, priorities, and distractions—that we may fail to make space for the most important guest of all.

This Advent season, let’s take the time to prepare room for Jesus in our hearts. Let’s clear away the distractions, the busyness, and the barriers that may prevent us from experiencing the fullness of His presence. Jesus chose a humble manger, and He still chooses humble hearts.

He meets us where we are, but we must make room for Him.

Action Step: Consider ways to “make room” for Jesus today. Are there activities or distractions taking your attention away from God? Consider taking time today to put those things aside and focus on Him. You could also make a tangible expression of Jesus’ humble beginning by donating to a local shelter or ministry that serves those in need in honor of Christ’s humble birth.

“Jesus was born in a stable so we could know we are never alone.”

The humility of Jesus’ birth means He is not distant or unreachable. He came into the world in the lowest circumstances so that we could always know He was near us, especially in our lowest moments.

Prayer: “Lord Jesus, thank You for coming to us in such a humble way. Thank You for showing us that You are willing to meet us in the simple and overlooked places. I pray that You help me make room for You in my heart and life. Remove the distractions and busyness that keep me from focusing on You. May I always be mindful of Your humble beginnings and the love that brought You to us. Amen.”
