Forgiveness is one of the most profound expressions of love. It reflects the heart of Christ, who forgave even as He was being crucified. Yet, forgiveness is not always easy. It requires humility, grace, and a willingness to let go of resentment. As believers, we are called to extend forgiveness just as we have received it from God.

“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” —Ephesians 4:32 (ESV)

Forgiveness is an act of love that reflects God’s grace and frees us from bitterness.

One of the most significant barriers to loving others fully is unforgiveness. Holding onto past hurts can create walls in our hearts, preventing us from experiencing the fullness of God’s love. However, Scripture is straightforward—just as God has forgiven us in Christ, we are called to extend that same grace to others.

Jesus modeled forgiveness throughout His ministry. From forgiving the woman caught in adultery to asking God to forgive those who crucified Him, Christ demonstrated a love that knows no bounds. When we choose to forgive, we are not excusing wrongs but surrendering them to God. Forgiveness releases us from resentment and allows us to walk in the freedom of love.

In The Fruit of the Spirit, Donald Gee reminds us that true forgiveness is only possible through the work of the Holy Spirit within us. It is not something we accomplish in our strength but through God’s transformative love.

Is there someone in your life you need to forgive? How has holding onto unforgiveness affected your heart?

This week, take a step toward forgiveness. Pray for those who have hurt you, ask God for the grace to let go, and, if possible, extend a word of reconciliation. Experience the freedom that comes from releasing bitterness and embracing love.

“To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you.” —Lewis B. Smedes

Prayer:
Father, thank You for the gift of forgiveness. Help us release bitterness and extend grace as You have so freely given us. Fill our hearts with love that heals and restores. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
