No one likes trials. Whether it’s personal hardship, disappointment, or suffering, our natural reaction is to avoid pain, not embrace it. Yet, in the second verse of his letter, James tells us to “count it all joy” when we face trials. Wait—joy? How can we possibly find joy in the middle of suffering?

As we continue our Faith in Action – Walking Through James journey, we’ll discover that God never wastes a trial. Instead, He uses them to grow our faith, strengthen our endurance, and shape us into mature followers of Christ.

“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”
—James 1:2-4 (ESV)

Trials are not obstacles to our faith—they are growth opportunities.

James doesn’t say if you face trials; he says when you meet them. Hardship is inevitable in life. But notice that James doesn’t merely tell us to endure trials—he says to count them as joy. This seems utterly counterintuitive until we realize what James is saying:

  • Trials are tests of our faith. God allows difficulties to refine us, like fire purifies gold (1 Peter 1:6-7).
  • Trials produce steadfastness. The Greek word for steadfastness (hypomonē) means perseverance, endurance, and unwavering faith. Without trials, we wouldn’t develop the strength needed to keep going.
  • Trials lead to spiritual maturity. James says endurance will make us “perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” This doesn’t mean we’ll be sinless but fully developed in our faith, able to stand firm in any circumstance.

The enemy wants trials to break you—God wants them to build you.

Think about a time when you went through a hardship and, in hindsight, saw how God used it for good. Maybe He deepened your faith, strengthened your trust in Him, or used your experience to encourage someone else.

James teaches us that God is doing something in our trials, even when we don’t see it yet. That’s why we can count it all joy—not because the trial is pleasant, but because we trust the outcome.

Action Step:

  • Shift your perspective. Instead of asking, “Why is this happening?” ask, “What is God doing through this?”
  • Pray for endurance. Ask God to help you remain steadfast in faith, no matter your trial.
  • Encourage someone. Who in your life is going through a hard time? Share this passage from James with them and remind them that God is working in their situation.

“Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny.”
—C.S. Lewis

Heavenly Father, thank You for using trials to strengthen and refine my faith. Help me to trust You in difficulty and to see my hardships as opportunities for spiritual growth.
