In a constantly shifting world where circumstances can change in an instant, it’s easy to wonder: Is God still good? We may struggle with doubt when life is hard, asking, Does God really care? Trusting in God’s goodness and knowing every perfect gift comes from Him is a benefit a believer has because of their relationship with him.

James reminds us of a powerful truth: God’s nature is unchanging, and every good thing comes from Him. Unlike life’s unpredictability, God remains steady, faithful, and trustworthy. His gifts are always good, even when we don’t understand them.

As we continue our Faith in Action – Walking Through James journey, today’s passage calls us to trust in God’s unwavering goodness—not just in the good times, but especially in the difficult ones.

“Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.” —James 1:16-18 (ESV)

God’s goodness is constant—His gifts are always perfect, and His character never changes.

James begins with a warning: “Do not be deceived.” Why? Because we can easily misinterpret God’s character based on our circumstances. When trials come, we might question His goodness. But James reminds us of an essential truth:

• Every good and perfect gift comes from God. The blessings in our lives—our salvation, our breath, the beauty of creation, relationships, and opportunities—all flow from Him.

• God is the “Father of lights.” This imagery points to the Creator of the sun, moon, and stars—lights that He set in place and governs precisely. If He controls the vast universe, how much more can He be trusted with our lives?

• God does not change. Unlike shifting shadows, His character is firm and steadfast. While people, seasons, and emotions change, God remains the same—yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8).

The Greatest Gift of All

James points us to the ultimate example of God’s goodness—our salvation: “Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.” (v. 18) God’s greatest gift to us is new life in Christ. It wasn’t something we earned; His will and grace gave it. That alone is proof of His unchanging love and goodness!

So when life feels uncertain, remember this: God has never stopped being good. His love, His plans, and His purpose for you remain firm.

Action Step:

  • Write down five good things God has given you. When doubt creeps in, remind yourself of His faithfulness.
  • Surrender your circumstances to God. Trust that He works for your good, even when you can’t see it yet.
  • Encourage someone. Who in your life is struggling with doubt or hardship? Share this passage with them and remind them of God’s goodness.

“God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.” —John Piper
