How often do we pass judgment on others—whether in our thoughts, words, or attitudes? We might not even realize it, but judging others can become second nature. We assess people’s choices, compare ourselves, and sometimes even elevate our own righteousness above theirs. But James reminds us of a critical truth: God alone is the rightful Judge.
As we continue our Faith in Action – Walking Through James journey, today’s passage challenges us to let go of a judgmental spirit and trust God’s perfect justice.
“Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, He who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?”
—James 4:11-12 (ESV)
God alone has the authority to judge. Our role is to love, encourage, and point others to Him.
James is firm and direct about the danger of judging others. He calls out slander, criticism, and a self-righteous attitude, reminding us that when we judge, we place ourselves in a role that belongs to God alone.
1. The Danger of Speaking Against Others
James warns, “Do not speak evil against one another.” This includes:
- Gossip – Talking negatively about others behind their backs.
- Slander – Spreading false or damaging information.
- Critical speech – Harsh words that tear others down instead of building them up.
When we speak against others, we go against God’s law of love (James 2:8) and set ourselves up as both judge and jury.
2. The Problem with Playing Judge
James reminds us that God alone is the Lawgiver and Judge.
- When we judge others, we assume a position that belongs to God.
- Instead of being doers of the Word, we become critics, focusing on others rather than working on our obedience.
- We forget that we, too, are imperfect and need grace.
Jesus echoed this in Matthew 7:1-5 when He said:
- “Judge not, that you be not judged.”
- “Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?”
Before pointing fingers at others, we need to examine our hearts.
3. Trusting God’s Perfect Justice
James asks, “Who are you to judge your neighbor?”
This isn’t a call to ignore sin or abandon discernment. Instead, it’s a reminder that:
- God sees the whole picture—we do not.
- He alone knows hearts, intentions, and circumstances.
- His justice is perfect, while ours is often clouded by bias and sin.
Rather than condemning others, we are called to extend grace, speak truth in love, and trust God to handle judgment.
How Do We Let Go of a Judgmental Spirit?
- Examine our hearts first. Before pointing out flaws in others, ask: Am I honoring God in my own life?
- Speak with grace. When addressing sin, do so gently, prayerfully, and humbly (Galatians 6:1).
- Leave ultimate judgment to God. Trust that He will deal with every situation justly.
Action Step:
- Ask God to reveal any judgmental attitudes in your heart.
- Choose grace over criticism. Find a way to encourage someone instead of judging them.
- Pray for humility. Ask God to help you trust His justice rather than taking judgment into your own hands.
“Be hard on yourself and easy on others. Carry your own cross and never lay one on the back of another.”

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I have judged others instead of extending grace. Help me to trust You as the perfect Judge. Teach me to speak words that build up, not tear down, and to love others as You have loved me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
