The answer is yes. Because joy is not dependent on circumstances. True joy comes from the presence of God. Even when life is hard, His joy is available to strengthen you right in the middle of the mess.

Joy is not found in perfect circumstances but in God’s unchanging presence.
Big Idea 1: Joy Is Deeper Than Happiness
Happiness depends on what’s happening. When life aligns with your hopes, happiness is natural. But when hardships arise, happiness can fade quickly. Joy, however, is anchored in something far more stable and enduring. The people of Israel in Nehemiah’s time were grieving as they heard God’s Word and recognized their failures. Yet Nehemiah reminded them that despite their sorrow, the joy of the Lord would be their strength.
God’s joy is not a surface-level emotion that comes and goes with changing circumstances. It flows from knowing who God is: His unchanging character, His faithful promises, and His constant nearness. Even when circumstances shift, His presence remains steady. This joy in the middle is rooted in the assurance that God is in control, that His love is unfailing, and that His grace is sufficient for every moment, even the most difficult ones.

As you draw near to Him, He fills you with supernatural strength that enables you to keep walking forward even when you feel like stopping. His joy renews your perspective, giving you courage to face each day with hope rather than despair. You do not walk through the struggle alone; God’s joy becomes the steady hand guiding you through every challenge.
Big Idea 3: Joy Is Found in God’s Presence
Psalm 16:11 declares, “In your presence there is fullness of joy.” This verse reminds us that joy is not something we have to chase through changing circumstances or perfect outcomes. Instead, it is something we can access right now by intentionally drawing near to God.
You do not have to wait for life to settle or for your problems to resolve before you experience joy in the middle. Joy is available today, right in the middle of whatever season you are facing, because God’s presence is constant and unchanging.
When you worship, pray, meditate on His Word, or sit in stillness before Him, His joy begins to fill the empty spaces of your soul. In those quiet moments, you are reminded that He is sovereign, faithful, and in control. Joy flows not from having all the answers or solving every problem but from being close to the One who holds your life in His hands. His nearness brings peace, strength, and a deep-rooted joy that sustains you even in the hardest seasons.
