We spend so much of life chasing treasure. Whether it is financial security, career success, recognition, or comfort, we are conditioned to believe that treasure brings fulfillment. But Jesus challenges that mindset with a simple and profound invitation: store up treasure in heaven. In God’s economy, true treasure is not measured by what we possess but by what we pursue. The kind of treasure that lasts is eternal, unshakable, and rooted in the heart of God.
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19–21
True treasure is found not in accumulation but in eternal investment.
Jesus spoke these words during the Sermon on the Mount, offering a perspective that turns the world’s priorities upside down. Instead of seeking comfort through material wealth, He calls us to live with eternity in mind. The way we use our time, energy, and resources reveals what we truly value. If our hearts are tied to temporary things, we will always feel unsettled. But when our hearts are tied to God’s kingdom, we begin to experience peace that outlasts our circumstances.
Big Idea 1: Earthly Treasure Fades
No matter how much we gather on earth, none of it is secure. Everything we own is vulnerable to decay, theft, or change. Even our most prized possessions can lose their value or be taken away by circumstances beyond our control. Investments can crash, material goods can break, and recognition can quickly fade from memory. Jesus warns against placing our hope in earthly treasures because they are always temporary and never fully satisfying.
In God’s economy, value is not found in how much we store up for ourselves but in what we are willing to give away. What we accumulate for selfish gain will eventually fade, but what we give, sow, and sacrifice for His kingdom will endure forever. True treasure is not counted in dollars or displayed on shelves. It is seen in lives impacted, hearts changed, and eternal seeds planted through love and generosity. When we shift our trust from earthly wealth to eternal worth, we begin to see our resources not as trophies, but as tools for God’s purposes.
Big Idea 2: Eternal Treasure Multiplies
Treasure in heaven is not just a future reward. It is a present reality that shapes how we live today and how we view every opportunity. When we love others, give generously, serve with humility, and share the gospel with compassion, we are making deposits into an eternal account that never loses value. These actions may seem small to the world, but they carry immense weight in the eyes of God.
In God’s economy, eternal treasure multiplies in ways we cannot always see immediately. A kind word, a sacrificial gift, a prayer spoken in faith; these are acts that ripple into eternity. The impact of our obedience does not end with the moment. It is magnified by God’s grace and used to advance His kingdom in powerful ways.
True treasure is found in alignment with God’s heart and mission. When we give of ourselves for His glory, we are participating in something eternal. Every act of surrender becomes a seed that God multiplies for His purposes. Eternal treasure does not fade with time. It grows because it is rooted in the very nature of who God is.
Big Idea 3: Your Treasure Shapes Your Heart
Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” These words reveal a powerful spiritual truth: our hearts are not static. They follow the direction of our treasure. In other words, whatever we prioritize with our time, money, and attention will shape the affections and direction of our hearts. If we consistently invest in temporary things, such as possessions, status, and personal comfort, our hearts will drift toward self-centeredness and away from the presence of God.
But when we intentionally treasure the things that matter to God, our hearts are softened and transformed. We begin to care more deeply about people, justice, grace, truth, and mission. We grow in generosity and compassion. Spiritual growth is not just about what we believe, but what we value. True treasure shifts our attention to eternal realities and calls us to walk in deeper intimacy with Christ.
To treasure what God treasures is to draw closer to His heart. It is to live in step with His values, to invest in His kingdom, and to align our priorities with heaven. In God’s economy, what we chase reveals who we trust. And when our treasure is found in Him, our hearts will follow in joyful obedience and enduring love.
Conclusion
Treasure is not wrong. It just needs to be rightly placed. When we shift our focus from storing up to sowing out, from clinging to releasing, we find the kind of treasure that cannot be stolen or spoiled. In God’s economy, true treasure is measured by obedience, generosity, and love. That is the kind of wealth that lasts forever.
