Always Do Right Proverbs 1:32–33

Introduction

I have always loved reading through the book of Proverbs and meditating on the wisdom and insight provided there. While I have not always been good at applying the principles in the text, I know that my spiritual, relational, and personal walk with the Lord and others is profitable. Following the wisdom in the book of Proverbs, we can do what is right and reap the rewards of a blessed life. Mark Twain stated: “Always do right—this will gratify some and astonish the rest.”

In the book of Proverbs, wisdom is personified and speaks directly to us, offering guidance and warning. Proverbs 1:32-33 concludes chapter 1, delivering a powerful contrast between the fate of the foolish and the reward of the wise. Let’s delve into these verses to understand the profound truth they hold and how they can shape our lives.

The Consequence of Foolishness (Proverbs 1:32)

For the simple are killed by their turning away, and the complacency of fools destroys them.

These verses reveal a general rule about the outcome of ignoring wisdom. The term “simple” here refers to those mentioned earlier in verse 22 who love ignorance and reject instruction. Turning away signifies a deliberate refusal to heed the guidance that leads to right living. This act of turning away from wisdom brings about their downfall.

• The Simple: These individuals are characterized by their love for ignorance. They choose to remain uninformed and resist learning what is right.
• Turning Away: This phrase indicates a refusal to accept correction and instruction. It’s not just passive ignorance but an active decision to ignore wisdom.
• Consequence: The refusal to listen to instructions ultimately leads to death. This death can be understood metaphorically as a complete ruin of one’s life due to poor choices and lack of wisdom.

The verse also speaks of the complacency of fools. Complacency here means being at ease by neglecting or ignoring what should be done. Other translations, such as the Contemporary English Version (CEV), read, “Self-satisfaction brings destruction to fools.” The Good News Translation (GNT) translates it as “Stupid people are destroyed by their lack of concern.” This complacency and indifference leads to their destruction—paying no attention to what should be done results in a downfall, highlighting the danger of self-satisfaction and negligence.

The Reward of Wisdom (Proverbs 1:33)

But whoever listens to me will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of disaster.

Verse 33 contrasts the previous verse, offering hope and security to those who choose wisdom.

• But: This word marks a significant contrast. Unlike the simple and the fools, those who listen to wisdom have a different outcome.
• Listens: This is the same Hebrew verb used in verse 5, meaning to hear and obey. It’s not just about hearing words but acting on them.
• Dwell Secure: Those who heed wisdom will live safely. They will have security and peace of mind.
• Be at Ease: This parallels dwelling securely, indicating a life free from anxiety and fear. It means having peace of mind and not being troubled by concerns about misfortune.
• Without Dread of Evil: “evil” refers to trouble or misfortune resulting from sin. Listening to wisdom protects one from the anguish and problems that plague the foolish.

Practical Application

These verses challenge us to examine our own lives and attitudes toward wisdom. Are we like the simple, turning away from instruction and loving ignorance? Are we complacent, at ease in neglecting what should be done? Or are we listening to wisdom, dwelling securely, and living without dread of disaster?

To be secure and at ease, we must actively seek and apply wisdom in our daily lives. This means being open to correction, eager to learn, and committed to living rightly. Wisdom is not just about acquiring knowledge but about applying it to bring about peace and security.

Conclusion

Proverbs 1:32-33 offers a timeless truth: wisdom leads to life and security, while the path of folly leads to destruction. Let us listen to wisdom, dwell securely, and live in peace, free from the fear of disaster. We align ourselves with God’s design for a flourishing life by embracing and applying wisdom daily.
