Scripture: Mark 10:45 (ESV) “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Devotional
When we think about joy, serving others might not be the first thing that comes to mind. Yet, Jesus teaches us that true joy is found in giving ourselves to others, just as He did. Mark 10:45 reminds us that even the Son of God did not come to be served, but to serve and give His life as a ransom for many. Jesus, the King of Kings, found joy in serving others, and we are called to follow in His footsteps.
There is a unique joy that comes from putting others before ourselves. When we serve, we are reflecting the heart of God. We are stepping into the role of a servant, just as Jesus did. Serving isn’t always glamorous. It can be tiring, inconvenient, and even unnoticed by others. But God sees our hearts, and He takes delight in our acts of service. And in that place of humble service, we find a deep and lasting joy that comes not from recognition but from knowing we are pleasing God.
True service comes from a heart that loves and desires to bless others, not for personal gain but out of a desire to share the love of Christ. Whether it’s small acts of kindness or large sacrifices, each act of service is an opportunity to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible way. Jesus modeled servant leadership throughout His life, showing us that the greatest in the kingdom of God is the one who serves.
When we serve others, we also grow spiritually. Serving allows us to take our focus off ourselves and look at the needs of others. It helps us develop a heart of compassion, humility, and gratitude. As we serve, we often find that the joy we experience is far greater than anything we could have imagined. The joy of serving doesn’t just bless those we serve; it fills us with the peace and satisfaction that comes from fulfilling God’s purpose for our lives.
Today, let’s embrace the joy of serving, knowing that as we serve others, we are serving Christ.
Action Step
Find a specific way to serve someone today. It could be helping a neighbor, offering a listening ear, volunteering your time, or meeting a practical need. As you serve, do it with a heart of love and gratitude, remembering that you are following the example of Jesus.
Afterward, reflect on how serving impacted both the person you helped and your own heart. How did this act of service bring joy to your day?
Prayer
Lord, thank You for showing us what it means to serve through the example of Jesus. Help me to follow in His footsteps, serving others with love and humility. Open my eyes to the needs around me and give me the heart to serve without seeking recognition or reward. Teach me to find joy in serving, knowing that I am reflecting Your love to the world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
