“By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” – John 13:35 (ESV)

One of our greatest responsibilities as followers of Christ is to love others as Jesus loves us. In John 13:35, Jesus tells His disciples that the world will recognize us as His followers by our love for one another. This love isn’t just a feeling—it’s an active, visible expression of God’s heart. So, how do we show this love in practical ways?

The Parable of the Burdened Merchant

Once, a merchant named Elias lived in a quiet rural village. Elias was known throughout the land for his vast collection of goods. His shop overflowed with fabrics, grains, spices, and trinkets from distant lands. Yet, despite his wealth, Elias felt an ever-growing burden. His mind was always occupied with thoughts of how to grow his business, protect his profits, and ensure his store remained the best in the region.

One day, a weary and hungry traveler came to Elias’ shop. The traveler had no money to offer but asked Elias if he could spare a small meal and a place to rest for the night.

Elias, consumed by his worries, initially dismissed the traveler. “I have worked hard to fill my store and earn what I have. Why should I give to someone who offers me nothing in return?”

The traveler nodded in understanding but, before leaving, quietly said, “I’ve heard it said that the weight of one’s wealth can sometimes be heavier than the burdens of the poor.”

This statement lingered in Elias’ mind long after the traveler departed. His burdens, indeed, felt heavier each day. He had everything he needed, yet peace eluded him. His nights were restless, and his heart was constantly anxious.

Several days later, an elderly woman entered his shop. She was from the village and was well-known for her kindness to those in need. She had little, but she always found a way to help others. That day, she came to ask Elias for a donation for a family in the village who had fallen on hard times.

A Moment of Decision

For a moment, Elias hesitated. He thought of all his goods and how each item represented his hard work and sacrifice. Then he remembered the traveler’s words, and something stirred within him.

“I’ve heard it said that the weight of one’s wealth can sometimes be heavier than the burdens of the poor.”

Reluctantly, he gave the woman a bag of food and some blankets. To his surprise, after she left, Elias felt lighter, as if the act of giving had lifted part of the burden he had been carrying.

Days passed, and Elias began to notice something. He felt freer whenever he gave something to someone in need, whether it was a kind word, a meal, or simply his time. The worries that once consumed him began to fade. His store was still successful, but it was no longer the source of his peace.

One day, he heard a preacher in the village square speaking from the Gospel of John, “By this, all people will know that you are my disciples if you have a love for one another” (John 13:35 ESV). At that moment, Elias realized that true wealth was not found in the goods he owned or his profits. It was found in serving others with love, just as Christ had taught.

From then on, Elias made it his mission to serve his village. His store remained full, as did his heart, for he no longer sought to satisfy himself. Through giving and serving, he had found the freedom he had longed for.

The Moral

Like Elias, we can find freedom from our burdens when we look beyond ourselves and serve others in love. When we live out Jesus’ call to love one another, we lift others and free ourselves from the weight of our selfish desires.

Here are five actionable steps every believer can take to demonstrate God’s love in their daily lives:

1. Serve Others Selflessly

Jesus modeled servant leadership when He washed His disciples’ feet, and He called us to do the same by serving others humbly and without expecting anything in return.

Action Step: Look for ways to serve someone this week—helping a neighbor, volunteering at church, or taking on a task someone else may struggle with. When we serve selflessly, we reflect the heart of Christ.

2. Forgive Freely

God’s love is marked by forgiveness. Holding onto grudges or bitterness only hinders the flow of His love through us. True love forgives, even when it’s difficult.

Action Step: If there is someone in your life that you need to forgive, take the first step today. Pray for the strength to release hurt or resentment and seek reconciliation if possible. Show grace as God has shown grace to you.

3. Practice Empathy

One of the most powerful ways to love others is by understanding and sharing in their joys and struggles. Empathy allows us to connect with people more deeply, showing them they are seen, valued, and cared for.

Action Step: The next time someone shares their feelings or concerns with you, truly listen. Don’t rush to offer advice or solutions; instead, validate their feelings and be present in their moment of need. A listening ear often speaks louder than words.

4. Speak Encouraging Words

Our words carry immense power. In a world of negativity and criticism, offering genuine encouragement and kindness can profoundly express love.

Action Step: Make it a habit to build others up with your words. Compliment someone’s efforts, offer a kind word of support, or send an encouraging message to a friend who may be struggling. Be intentional about speaking life and hope into the lives of those around you.

5. Be Generous with Your Time and Resources

Love is often shown through giving—whether our time, attention, or resources are given to meet the needs of others. Generosity reflects the heart of God, who gave His only Son for us.

Action Step: This week, look for ways to be generous. It could be as simple as spending time with someone lonely, offering financial support to a cause, or sharing a meal with a friend in need. When we give generously, we reflect the boundless love of Christ.

Conclusion:
Loving others as Christ loves us is not just a suggestion—it’s a mark of true discipleship. We can become beacons of God’s love in a world that desperately needs it by taking intentional steps to serve, forgive, empathize, encourage, and give.

As you go about your day, remember that people will recognize the presence of Christ in your life not just by what you say but by how you love.

Let’s make love the distinguishing factor that sets us apart, as Jesus instructed in John 13:35.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Thank You for the example of love You have given us through Jesus. As You remind us in John 13:35, it is through our love for one another that the world will see You in us. Help us to live out this love in our daily lives, not just in words, but in action.

Lord, give us a heart like Yours that seeks to serve others selflessly. Free us from the weight of our selfish desires, and show us how to extend grace, kindness, and generosity to those around us. Help us to be mindful of the needs of others and to give without expecting anything in return.

Teach us, Father, to forgive as You forgive, to empathize with those who are hurting, and to speak words of encouragement that bring life and hope. May our actions reflect Your heart, and may our lives testify to our freedom in serving others.

We ask for the strength and courage to walk in Your love, even when it is difficult. Use us as instruments of Your peace and love in our families, communities, and beyond. Let Your love be evident in all we do so that others may see You and come to know Your goodness.
