When the angel appeared to Joseph, he was given a direct and specific command: the child to be born should be named Jesus. This was no ordinary name. It was a name filled with meaning, purpose, and power. “Jesus” is derived from the Hebrew name Yeshua, meaning “The Lord saves.” It was a declaration of the mission and identity of the child—He was the Savior of the world, sent to rescue us from sin.

“She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21 (ESV)

The name of Jesus embodies salvation and hope.

The name of Jesus is unlike any other name. It carries the fullness of God’s plan for redemption and the promise of hope for all who believe. Through His name, we find forgiveness, peace, and eternal life. The angel’s words to Joseph remind us that Jesus did not come simply to teach or heal, though He did those things. His ultimate purpose was to save.

The name of Jesus also reminds us of the personal nature of salvation. The angel said, “He will save his people from their sins.” This is not a distant or abstract concept. Jesus came for you, me, and everyone who would call on His name. His salvation is both universal and deeply personal.

How often do we reflect on the power of Jesus’ name? It is a name that brings peace during chaos, strength in our weakness, and hope in our despair. When we pray in His name, we are not speaking empty words but are calling upon the authority and power of the Savior.

Jesus is above every name (Philippians 2:9-10), and one day, every knee will bow, and every tongue confesses that He is Lord.

Action Step: Take a moment today to meditate on the name of Jesus. Speak His name in prayer over the areas where you need salvation, hope, or peace. Write down a few words or phrases that come to mind when you think about what the name of Jesus means to you, and let those truths guide your prayers.

“There is no name so sweet on earth, no name so sweet in heaven, the name before His wondrous birth to Christ the Savior given.” – George W. Bethune

This hymn lyric reminds us of the beauty and power of Jesus’ name. Reflect on how His name brings comfort and hope into your life.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for the power and beauty of Your name. Thank You for coming to save me from my sins and to bring me hope and peace. Help me to trust in Your name in every situation and to call on You when I feel weak, afraid, or uncertain. May I never forget the incredible gift of salvation through Your name. Amen.
