There was a time when your love for Christ burned brightly—a season when your faith was fresh, passionate, and filled with joy. However, as time passes, life’s distractions, challenges, and routines can dim that fire. If you find yourself longing for that deep, intimate connection with Christ again, know He is always ready to restore and rekindle that first love in your heart.

“But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.” —Revelation 2:4 (ESV)

Returning to our first love for Christ requires intentionality, reflection, and renewed commitment.

In Revelation 2:4, Jesus speaks to the church in Ephesus, commending their works but pointing out a sobering reality—they had abandoned their first love. Their faith had become routine, their devotion mechanical. This reminds us that we can be active in ministry yet distant from Christ in our hearts.

Losing our first love happens subtly. The busyness of life, spiritual complacency, and even prolonged hardships can dull our passion for Christ. But the good news is that Jesus does not condemn us—He calls us back. He invites us to remember where we once were, repent, and return to Him with renewed devotion.

So, how do we rekindle our love for Christ? It begins with remembering—reflecting on the joy and awe we once had in our relationship with Him. Next, we repent—acknowledging anything that has taken priority over Him in our lives. Finally, we return—actively seeking Him through prayer, worship, and time in His Word.

When we return to our first love, everything else—our service, obedience, and passion—flows naturally from a heart entirely devoted to Him.

Have you noticed a decline in your passion for Christ? What distractions or habits may be pulling you away from your first love?

This week, set aside time to reflect on your spiritual journey. Journal about what first drew you to Christ and how your faith has grown. Pray for God to renew your passion, and take practical steps—such as fasting, extended prayer, or worship—to rekindle your love for Him.

Prayer:
Father, I long to return to the joy and intimacy I once had with You. Forgive me for allowing distractions to take my focus away from You. Rekindle my love, draw me near, and renew my passion for Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
