Many believers long to experience the fullness of God’s presence and the overflowing life but struggle with feeling spiritually dry. The key to an abundant life is living in daily surrender to the Holy Spirit. Being filled with the Spirit is not a one-time event but an ongoing relationship that refreshes and empowers us to walk in God’s will.

“And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.” —Ephesians 5:18 (ESV)

A Spirit-filled life is marked by continual surrender, empowering us to live in the fullness of God’s presence and purpose.

Paul’s command in Ephesians 5:18 to “be filled with the Spirit” indicates an ongoing process, not a one-time experience. Just as we need food and water daily to sustain our physical bodies, our spirits require daily filling with the presence of God. Without it, we can become weary, stagnant, and disconnected from Christ’s abundant life.

Being filled with the Spirit means yielding to Him in every aspect of our lives—our thoughts, emotions, decisions, and actions. It is a posture of dependence, recognizing that we cannot live out God’s calling in our strength. The Holy Spirit empowers us to love others, overcome sin, walk in wisdom, and bear spiritual fruit.

One key way to experience the Spirit’s fullness is through worship and prayer. When we come before God in humility, seeking Him with open hearts, He responds by filling us afresh. Spending time in Scripture also deepens our awareness of His voice, aligning our hearts with His truth. Additionally, being in a community with other Spirit-filled believers encourages us to remain steadfast and to walk in the Spirit’s power daily.

However, self-reliance is one of the greatest obstacles to experiencing the Spirit’s fullness. When we try to navigate life on our own, we unintentionally quench His work in us. The more we surrender and invite Him to take control, the more He leads us into greater joy, peace, and purpose.

When we seek His presence daily, we are refreshed, renewed, and empowered to live the overflowing life God desires for us.

Are you living in daily dependence on the Holy Spirit, or are you running on empty? How can you make space for Him to fill you afresh today?

This week, commit to seeking the Holy Spirit daily. Start each morning with a prayer of surrender, asking Him to fill you with His presence. Spend time in worship and Scripture, inviting Him to guide and empower your day.

“The Holy Spirit-filled life does not come by a single filling but by a continual habit of drinking deeply of His presence.” —A.W. Tozer
