Too often, as believers, we know a lot about God but rarely experience His transforming presence. Sometimes, this is simply a result of failing to spend time in prayer. Other times, we consider Him too distant and detached from our daily lives. However, God is closer than we think as we grow in prayer. So what are four practical benefits of prayer?

Growing in our prayer lives is more than just mastering techniques, methods, or the mechanics of prayer. Rather it is the alignment of our focus on God himself. We don’t simply go through the motions of prayer but experience the presence of God. Ultimately, prayer responds to God’s interest in us and the love that He has for us!

Prayer is a pathway to God’s presence.

Our awareness of God’s presence happens due to spending time with Him. Prayer not only deepens our relationship with God but it reveals His mind and will to us. When we pray, there is an increasing awareness of His Spirit at work in our lives. We glimpse the eternal realities that change how we experience and view life!

This reality of living in the presence of God doesn’t happen without effort. Scripture teaches that we are to desire and seek spending time with God. It requires us to take action and discipline ourselves to have constant communion with Him. When we do, it positions us to hear the voice of God and know His will for our lives!

Prayer facilitates a transforming friendship with God.

As we enter into the presence of God, we cannot help but experience supernatural transformation. The closer we come to the heart of God, the more we see our need for change in our lives. When we experience a revelation of Him, it is an invitation to adjust our will to His.

When we pray, God reveals our human failings, sets us free from them, and graciously empowers us to live for Him. Engaging with God in combination with His Word draws us near to Him and helps us to grow into the likeness of Christ. God designed prayer to be relational and transforming as we spend time hearing His voice!

Prayer is the pathway to God’s power.

The power of prayer is a direct result of spending time in the presence of God. The released power comes from the One who has invited us to pray and not in the prayer alone. Through the power of Jesus, prayer becomes the vehicle that changes things!

The life of prayer is a lifestyle of incredible adventure and has unlimited potential to transform everything! It moves us from a place of comfort to the impossible, becoming miraculously possible! Prayer is the requirement before revival, renewal, and miracles come. It is the difference between doing things for God and operating under the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit. There is a vast difference!

Prayer provides the means for effective ministry.

There is no doubt that prayer is an essential element of all ministry activity! Whether we minister in a pulpit or share Christ in our workplace, prayer makes the difference! When we read the accounts of great ministers in the Word, they all recognized the importance of spending time with God first.

Recognition of our insufficiency and weaknesses drives us to our knees to receive from our power source! When we give ourselves to many prayers, we can accomplish so much more than we can without it. So if we have not prayed, we cannot expect to receive supernatural results. Our effectiveness personally and in the lives of others will be affected!

Conclusion

Our willingness to commit ourselves to private prayer will determine our ability to minister effectively and our ability to navigate life! We cannot simply be a good person, leader, or skillful in ministry activity; we must be powerful in prayer. God will provide what we need to sustain and receive His blessings to accomplish His will. Take time to pray today; expect him to show up and experience these four practical benefits of prayer!
