One of the great elements of a believer’s life is that God is constantly transforming us into the image of Christ. While there are seasons when we can struggle in the journey, God never leaves us alone and will help us move forward. You can take comfort in the fact that the Holy Spirit is in the business of renewing God’s people so that we can accomplish His will!
Every believer can tell you that when they met God, a transformation occurred. What they once were in their personal lives became brand new. The love and grace of God changed the old sinful life into something new. Paul described the change that accompanies every believer when he said, “They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. But that is not the way you learned Christ!” Ephesians 4:19–20 (ESV)
Paul differentiates between those who live in the world and those who are now in Christ. The world has allowed their hearts to be callous toward the things of God. In turn, they justify their ungodly behaviors according to an ever-changing world. They are easily persuaded by a world that cannot decide between right and wrong for itself.
For the believer, contact with a Heavenly Father and the grace that He has shown transformed their lives. Paul goes on to say, “But that is not the way you learned Christ!—assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.” Ephesians 4:20–24 (ESV)
He tells us that the truth we seek in our lives is found in Jesus. From the beginning, Jesus has not changed His standard of holiness for our lives. While the world changes with every wave of feeling or desire, Jesus has been the foundation for morality which is steadfast.
He helps us put off the old self and deceitful desires, renewing our spirit to become more like God in our holiness and righteousness. God wants to renew us into becoming what we were created to be from the beginning! When we choose to serve Him, the Holy Spirit will actively work in our lives to renew us each day!
