Striving sometimes feels spiritual. We stay busy, keep moving, and do more for God, believing we’re faithful. But there’s a more profound call—one that doesn’t come from performance or pressure but from peace. God isn’t asking us to hustle harder. He’s inviting us to surrender, not striving, to experience the peace and power of God in our lives.

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”
— Psalm 46:10 (ESV)

Peace and power are found in stillness before God.

We live in a “do more” culture. There are more tasks, more deadlines, and more expectations. Even in ministry or spiritual life, the pressure can mount—to be more holy, pray more fervently, give more generously, and serve more faithfully. While obedience and diligence are important, they are not meant to replace surrender.

Psalm 46 plunges us right into chaos. The psalm describes roaring waters, crumbling mountains, and raging nations. It paints a picture of turmoil and shaking—both externally in the world and internally in the soul. Then comes this gentle command that cuts through the noise: “Be still, and know that I am God.”

Stillness doesn’t come naturally when everything feels like it’s falling apart. Our instinct is to take control, fix the problem, and do something. But God tells us to do something radical: be still.

Why?

Because stillness is where we rediscover that He is God and we are not. It’s where we stop striving and start trusting, where we stop building in our own strength and start receiving His. Stillness re-centers our soul in the reality that God is in control—even when we are not.

Surrender is not passivity. An active faith requires laying down the illusion that we are holding everything together. It means confessing that our peace doesn’t come from perfect circumstances but from the perfect presence of God.

When we slow down and become still, we’re not giving up—we’re giving over. We’re inviting the Spirit to realign our priorities, refresh our spirits, and remind us that we are not alone in the storm. We stop wrestling with God and start resting in Him.

So today, if your mind is racing, your hands are full, and your soul is weary, let go. Be still. Surrender the striving. There’s a power in stillness that striving can never produce.

Action Step

Take 10 minutes today in total silence with no distractions—no phone, music, or agenda. Sit in God’s presence and whisper,
“You are God, and I am not. I trust You.”
Let stillness speak louder than your to-do list.

“We would worry less if we praised more. Thanksgiving is the enemy of discontent and dissatisfaction.”

Prayer

Father, You know how easily I slip into striving. I chase peace by doing more, yet You call me to be still. Today, I lay down my need to control and perform. I choose stillness. I surrender the striving and rest in the truth that You are God and enough. Help me live from a place of peace and dependence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
