Life naturally produces an abundance of challenges which can be difficult for us to figure out. Believers with true wisdom helps them to avoid envy and selfish ambition in order to produce peace and righteousness. In other words, true wisdom produces hope and purity!

Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. James 3:13 (ESV)

Being wise refers to someone with the moral insight and skill in deciding practical issues of conduct in their lives. Understanding has the idea of having the knowledge of an expert. As believers, we are encouraged to show the presence of wisdom by our actions.

It is through our obedience to the Lord’s commands for life, that we prove the presence of wisdom. Our humility in submitting ourselves to the plan God has for our lives, keeps us from falling into the traps of arrogance and self-seeking.

Jesus promised that the meek will inherit the earth. By this, Jesus meant that a believer that relates to God with dependence and contentment will receive God’s abundant blessings. Consequently, the ungodly cannot expect to receive anything from God if they have rejected Him!

But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. James 3:14–16 (ESV)

James goes on to tell us that earthly false wisdom produces bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in our hearts. When these elements begin to take root in our lives, it can not only affect your peace, but it also damages our relationships. They can blind us to the eternal truth of God’s Word and the positive impact of His wisdom.

Earthly wisdom that the world seems to boast in, doesn’t come from the Father. Instead, it comes from the natural world, the mental and emotional ideas of fallen human beings. This is why James calls it unspiritual and it’s origin is from the enemy. The devil uses this kind of wisdom to sow discord, twisted ideologies, and corrupt relationships.

But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. James 3:17–18 (ESV)

True wisdom is free from being self-centered and strife. In these two verses, James gives us eight traits of true wisdom from God. They are:

Purity: Those with true wisdom are pure in that they will put aside the vices of a self-seeking lifestyle.

Peace-loving: This is the demonstration of a desire to promote and be at peace with others.

Gentle: Being reasonable in the expectations we have of other people. This would include being patient with them.

Open to Reason: Another translation has the word submission which indicates a willingness to learn from others.

Full of Mercy: This trait is revealed by offering compassion to those who are in times of distress and conflict in their lives.

Good Fruits: Fruit that lasts will ultimately be full of kindness and helpful actions toward other people. Showing Christ-like behavior in how we interact with others.

Impartial: Being impartial without prejudice and is unwavering in its commitments.

Sincere: True wisdom will be genuine and open in it’s approach and availability to others.

The result? True wisdom will produce a harvest of righteousness which is living according to God’s will. It will also result in a life of peace and harmony with God and others around us.
