Looking back over the history of God’s word, it is interesting to note that it has survived many attempts to silence it. Many rulers, religious leaders, and the world in general have failed in their efforts to keep the Bible at bay. Yet, through it all He will protect His message because God’s word never fails!

So often, we hear of amazing stories about the Bible being miraculously saved during fires and floods. It is as if God was showing the owners that the only thing that matters is what He has spoken to them in the Word. When it happens this way, faith is often bolstered and the witness of God’s protective hand is glorified.

Not long ago, I read the story of a missionary that had quite a journey in getting to the field of India. This amazing story shows that God not only protects and provides for His children, but that His mission of spreading the Word is primary. He will not fail in making sure the mission of sharing Christ is available to all people!

Story: The Only Book Saved

Alexander Duff, the first foreign missionary of the Church of Scotland, got off to a rough start. He was young, only twenty-three, and bright and innovative. But on his way to India in 1829 with his new wife, he was shipwrecked—not once but twice! The most serious wreck occurred when his ship, the Lady Holland, was within a few miles of India.

At ten o’clock P.M., Duff was half-undressed when a shock and shudder ran through the vessel. He rushed to the deck where the captain met him with terrifying words, “Oh, she’s gone! She’s gone!” The ship split apart, but a portion clung precariously to a reef. Through the night the passengers huddled in terror in the surviving portion, expecting every moment to be swept away. They were saved the next day, but their clothes and prized possessions were lost, including Duff’s entire library of eight hundred volumes.

Later, standing on the shore and looking sadly toward the reef, Duff saw a small package bobbing atop the water. He watched and waited as it floated close enough for him to wade out and retrieve.

It was his Bible. Of all his precious books, it alone survived. His heart soared, for he took it as a sign from the Lord that this one book alone was worth more than all the others put together.

He assembled his fellow survivors and read Psalm 107, the Traveler’s Psalm. Soon, using the same Bible, he began his first class with a little group of five boys under a banyan tree. Within a week the class had grown to three hundred, and it soon became a school that evangelized and educated the higher classes in India, producing a qualified generation of leaders for the nation’s young church.

The Psalm that he read includes these promises:

Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. Then they were glad that the waters were quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven. Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! Let them extol him in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders. Psalm 107:28–32 (ESV)

God’s promises, found throughout His word will stand. He will do what He has promised for the believer and unbeliever. Those will not change.

While the world will do everything it can to try and silence the Word, God will make sure that it lives on until Jesus comes back for His own. We can trust that no matter what, He will make sure that all people will have a presentation of the gospel and the chance to serve Him!

It begins with Christ!

If you don’t know Christ as your savior, it all begins with the first step. Committing your life to serve Him is the greatest decision you will make in your life! Finally, for more information on serving the Lord: CLICK HERE!
