I can only imagine the flood of emotions that the followers of Jesus must have felt as they watched Him be crucified. All of the hopes they had held on to seemed to have died with Christ and were now buried in a tomb. Like the disciples, we often struggle when the heavens are silent and have no answers. Resting in the silence is only found by trusting in what God has already spoken to us!
Scripture
The women who had come with him from Galilee followed and saw the tomb and how his body was laid. Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments. On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment. Luke 23:55–56 (ESV)
The account of scripture gives us an interesting response to the death of Jesus. Luke tells us that the women not only made preparations to return but they took time to honor the scripture. Despite the pain of grief they were feeling, they honored the Sabbath as scripture commanded. Faith determined their actions regardless of the way things looked.
We often face times when the heavens seem silent to us. The situation may seem bleak, and we wonder what God is up to. Our faith can be tested during these times, and the enemy would love to persuade you that God does not care. Yet He does. When we don’t understand, it is important for us to return back to what we already know.
God has a plan that we cannot always comprehend or understand. However, we must remember that He is all-knowing and that we can trust His judgment in our lives. He has fulfilled promises, provided for us, and answered many prayers before. If He has been faithful to us in the past, He will be faithful throughout our lives.
The women in Luke did not know how things would work out. All they knew was they would honor God, no matter what. Their faith carried them through and provided the opportunity to see the fulfillment of scripture. He would rise again, and all of their questions would be answered.
