In a day of constant contention and obvious divisions, the believer has a responsibility to live differently than the world around them! Paul tells the believer to imitate God by being like Christ in our love toward others. Imitating Christ in our love is displayed by our willingness to give ourselves to serve others in worship to God!
Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 5:1–2 (ESV)
Many believers seem to confuse this message with the idea that we are to constantly be the “angry Jesus” in the temple. Constantly railing against people of the world and spilling it over to those we disagree with in the church.
Rather, Paul emphasizes the act of sacrifice in love that Christ gave on the cross. This act of love was not just for the like-minded disciple, but for the very ones who crucified Him. He gave His life so that sinners would have the opportunity to receive the greatest gift of all…grace.
My Prayer
It is my prayer, that I can imitate Christ when I deal with believer and unbeliever alike. Will there be disagreements, certainly. Yet, how I respond to those individuals is totally up to me. As a believer, empowered by the Holy Spirit, I must consciously choose my response.
The totality of Christ’s example was one that was balanced with love for those who are lost and tough love for those who failed to represent Him rightly. As Christ struck the balance, we have the ability through the Holy Spirit to do the same. What does your responses say about who you imitate?
Imitating Christ is a necessity today because it is counter to the culture. When we respond as Christ, we exhibit an example of a transformed life that is not governed by worldly passions. We have a purpose as a believer, to show the world who Christ is.
May our example preach Christ in a world that is ready for Good News!
It begins with Christ!
If you don’t know Christ as your savior, it all begins with the first step. Committing your life to serve Him is the greatest decision you will make in your life! For more information on serving the Lord: CLICK HERE!
