There are so many things about God that we love and are in awe of. Grace and love are by far the greatest characteristics that God embodies! But He is also all-powerful, ever-present, and all-knowing. In fact there is nothing that He cannot know or handle on earth and in heaven! We can take comfort in the fact that God knows everything!
His knowledge far exceeds our own because it is comprehensive and he has a great memory! He doesn’t have to research what He needs to know, He doesn’t have to rely on Google, take tests, or be taught anything. In fact, there is nothing that we can tell God that He doesn’t already know.
The Psalmist says, ”O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar.” Psalm 139:1–2 (ESV) This personalization of God’s ability to know the heart, thoughts, and life of the Psalmist reminds us that God is intimately involved in our inner lives.
This means that God not only knows what we like or dislike, but what we really believe about Him. While we may say one thing, He knows exactly where our heart lies with Him. He knows what is in our heart, even the secret things that we have not shared with others.
Inviting God Into Our Personal Spaces
David, after declaring God’s ability to know all things then turns it into a prayer when he says, ”Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts!” Psalm 139:23 (ESV) This bold and audacious prayer shows the humility of his life and the overwhelming desire to have a deeper relationship with God.
Essentially, David is inviting God to reveal every part of his heart and in so doing, reveals why He was considered a Man after God’s own heart. Since God transcends David’s reality, he bows to God’s immensity. God is greater than David’s present knowledge of Him.
What a blessing it is to put our trust in God who knows the past, present, and future! He has the ability to not only know all things, but is able to communicate to us His will and direction for our lives. When we pray and ask God to reveal our hearts He lovingly guides us to becoming more Christlike. Additionally, He will provide the counsel we need in the most desperate of times!
