As believers, scripture teaches us that Christ came from a position of honor to a place of humility on earth. This transition of position happened because of His willingness to serve the will of His Father and provide salvation for humanity. Jesus showed what having a position without pride was all about! His coming to earth is the supreme example of what it means to be humble!

Ever heard the phrase, “I know what you are going through” when we are faced with difficult circumstances. Usually, this phrase identifies that we have had similar experiences and can understand the emotions that go along with them. However, even if we haven’t faced what someone is going through, showing empathy is necessary because we may have a similar experience one day!

However, I cannot imagine what Christ experienced as He came to earth from the right hand of God and became human. This transition from heaven to earth is something we cannot completely understand or comprehend fully. Yet Jesus gave us a pattern to follow in emulating His attitude in coming to earth.

Scripture:

Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Philippians 2:5–8 (ESV)

The Spirit will lead an authentic Christian to become Christlike. Because of all that God has done for us by releasing us from the bondage and penalty of sin and has adopted us as His child, we give our all to Him with gratitude! In turn, we appreciate the gift of humility and strive to live the same way in our own lives!

The scripture above tells us that Jesus did not count equality with God as a thing to be grasped. Therefore, regardless of the honor that was due by His position, Jesus did not exploit it for His benefit. Instead, He gave up the glory of heaven and was born in a manger. Eventually, He gave His own life on the cross for a world that rejected Him.

As a disciple of Christ, we should expect to see more and more of His humility in our lives. We can only do so as we commit to exercising a selfless attitude toward the privileges and possessions He has given us. When we choose to live humbly, without drawing attention to ourselves or our things, we indeed show the attitude of Christ. He walked this earth with little of the worldly possessions that most have today.

Jesus knew that the actual possession to seek was not found on this earth but in heaven. He looked toward something that was far more critical, kingdom priorities. So while on earth, he did not expect the benefits but came to serve and give Himself to others. “Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.” Romans 12:10 (ESV)
